M.L. King's 6-year magic
Program riding a metro record pace with 52 wins already

Starting a football program from scratch is nothing new nowadays. After all, 37 new high schools have opened around metro Atlanta since 2000. But none of those programs has started like Martin Luther King.
In their sixth year, the Lions have won 52 games. With one more victory this season, they will do something no other existing metro Atlanta program did in its first six years since 1948, according to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association.
None of the familiar powers like Marist, Stephenson, Tucker, Parkview, Brookwood or Harrison started like the Lions have. It was now-downtrodden North Springs that set the metro standard by winning 52 games during its first six years (1964-69).
How did M.L. King get so good, so quickly?
"I tell people all the time that we have a different breed of kids," said Lions coach Corey Jarvis. "We've got kids who truly care about the program."
Jarvis discovered that shortly before he took the job three years ago, after M.L. King's first head coach, Ken Barrow, moved to Mundy's Mill.
"I came to see the school —- and it was a day when the kids were out of school —- and there were about 30 kids working out in the weight room and about 30 others on the field running and doing drills," said Jarvis, who was Mary Persons' defensive coordinator.
"I couldn't believe that these kids would do that without a head coach for three months. That is the sign of a great program."
The Lions had actually reached that pinnacle even before that. In their second year, they made the state quarterfinals and finished 11-2. They followed that by getting to the semifinals at 11-3.
"I went to the [Georgia] Dome when I was in ninth grade. When I first saw that, I was like, 'I want to be one of those guys,' "said senior tailback Cordellaro Jones.
"Everybody was together, wanting to win. At that time, they looked like giants. It was stuff I had never seen before, coming from a middle school. I said, 'Dang, I want to know what to do to get what they've got.' They said dedication and hard work. I've been feeding off that ever since."
Jones and Company did just that by going 9-3 to reach the second round the next year, and they bettered that last season, moving up to AAAAA from AAA, finishing 10-2 and getting to the second round again.
Now even greater things may be coming with the team ranked No. 3 and standing at 8-0.
"I am not surprised," said Barrow, their former coach. "I figured they were going to continue on to be pretty good as the years went on. Coach Jarvis is doing a great job of continuing the tradition that we started over there. Once you start a tradition, then you are going to get more kids coming to your school."
Numbers back that up. More than 150 players are involved in the program —- an all-time high. But it is not just the numbers. The Lions happen to be a pretty talented group on top of that.
"We've been fortunate enough to have a run of athletes," Jarvis said. "My first year here we had 12 kids that signed scholarships. Last year we had seven, and this year we will have probably have more than [12]."
Jarvis credits some of that to strong local recreation leagues —- at Gresham Park, Browns Mill and Salem Middle School.
"They've done a great job of having the kids prepared when they come over here," he said. "A lot of our kids played with or against each other and know each other real well when they get here. That helps."
